Obituary for Gam Doo Yee

Gam Doo Yee
Gam Doo Yee passed away peacefully, after a short illness, on Friday, February 3, 2023, at the age of 92 years.

Gam leaves behind to mourn his wife of 68 years, Jean Mah Yee of Edmonton; sons, Allan and Croy (Cindy) of Edmonton; daughter, Silvia Yee (Alex Wang) of Albany, California; and five grandchildren, Thomas, Alanna, Nicholas, Madeline and Olivia.

He was predeceased by both his parents, Lem Hing Yee and Leong Shee Yee; his older sister, Mrs. Tad Kwong of Vancouver; and a granddaughter, Melissa Paige Yee.

Gam was born in the 10th lunar month of 1930 in Taishan, China. He and his mother, Leong Shee, were brought over to Canada in 1949 by his father after the Communist takeover of mainland China and the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act, which allowed Chinese families to be reunited in Canada.

Despite training as a journalist in China, Gam became an entrepreneur and businessman in Edmonton and managed various small businesses, including a grocery store and several restaurants in the city. Though retired since 1981, he kept busy by looking after his grandchildren, watching sports on TV (the Edmonton Eskimos and Oilers, the San Francisco 49ers, pro tennis and basketball), practicing Chinese calligraphy, reading Chinese literature, swimming regularly at city recreation centres, tending a large collection of blooming house plants, getting involved with Chinese cultural organizations in Edmonton and managing his stock portfolio. Gam loved to celebrate holidays and family birthdays with a special meal, where he could watch his grandchildren eat and enjoy arguing and laughing with his kids. He keenly appreciated the value of a good education and made sure each of his children obtained one, as well as helped the local chapter of the Yee Fung Toy Society establish a program of scholarships awarded for post secondary education.

A viewing will take place Friday, February 10, 2023, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Park Memorial, 9709 – 111 Avenue, Edmonton. A Funeral Service will be held at Park Memorial Chapel on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at 1 p.m. with interment to follow in Beechmount Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Yee Fung Toy Society of Edmonton, 9643 – 101A Avenue, Edmonton, AB, Canada T5H 0C8.
