Obituary for Helen (Lena) Herman

Helen (Lena) Herman
Helen (Lena) Herman, a daughter, sister, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2023 aged 101 years.

“Live your life and forget your age” ~Norman Vincent Peale

This quote by Helen’s favorite author, describes how she led her life, with strength and resilience.

Helen was born in Edmonton and lived in her Rossdale home from age 3 until age 96 when a fall necessitated a move. She worked as secretary to the Postmaster until her retirement and was a whiz at shorthand. In her younger days she participated in yoga and Tai Chi, and still kept active well into her 90’s. She was a member of the African Violet Society, and loved to garden, spending as much time outdoors as she could, even on the coldest day of winter. She loved to feed the birds and stray cats. Helen had a passion for cooking and baking, often taking various cooking classes, then practicing her skills over family dinners, or sharing her baking. She valued her family and her friends, with many fond memories made while enjoying meals together, and she always appreciated the kindness and friendship shown to her by her neighbors.

She will be dearly missed by her niece, Janet (Jim) Lockau; great-niece, Laura Lockau; great-nephew, Tommy Lockau; and dear friend, Linda (Randy) Schauer.

Helen was predeceased by her parents, Mary and William Herman; sisters, Anna (Ted) Sallows and Rose (Tom) Peart; brother, Nicholas; as well as her long time childhood friend, Esther (Alec) Gemmell.

We would like to thank the staff at Jubilee Lodge Nursing Home for the excellent care Helen received. If you wish to make a donation in her honor, please consider the Jubilee Lodge Nursing Home Recreation Program (10333-76 St NW, Edmonton, AB T6A 3A8) or any charity of your choice.

A private memorial has been held to honor Helen’s life.
