Condolence: The Edmonton Chapter of the Canadian Orthopaedic Nurses Association (CONA) would like to extend our deepest condolences to Mary Lou’s family and friends and to those that had the opportunity to work with Mary Lou.
Many of us in Orthopaedics have had the pleasure of working along side Mary Lou at one point in our careers. She had a compassion for nursing and for the betterment of health care. Her unwavering determination and tenacity to drive change through innovation and hard work was inspiring. Mary Lou led many teams and received several awards and commendations for her work – a testimony to her remarkable leadership skills. Her infectious laugh and sense of humor will always be fondly remembered.
Each year at our National Conference CONA acknowledges the work of an extraordinary nurse who has made a difference to patients and to the profession of nursing. The nurse selected is asked to be the Edith Cavell speaker at Conference and in appreciation they are presented with a print of Mount Edith Cavell. This year the Edmonton Local Chapter of CONA selected Mary Lou as the Edith Cavell speaker in recognition of the tremendous work she has done and the support she has given CONA. Mary Lou was humbled to be chosen- yet another commendable trait she possessed.
CONA presented her a painting of the Edith Cavell mountain, done by CONA member Stella Callender, which she hung in her office. Mary Lou chose to speak on the Importance of Leadership in Nursing, a topic near and dear to her heart. She was a tremendous leader and will be missed.
