Obituary for Paul Diachuk

Paul Diachuk
July 2, 1931 – January 4, 2023

With great sorrow we announce the passing of Paul Diachuk on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at the age of 91 years.

Paul is survived by his wife of 55 years, Iris; son, Randy (Carolyn); two precious grandchildren, Zoe and Tate, all of whom he loved dearly; sister-in-law, Belinda Kotyshyn and other extended family members.

He was predeceased by his infant daughter, parents and half-brother, Lawrence Diachuck (2021).

Paul was born in Dohiw, Western Ukraine. A year following his mother’s passing in 1935, he immigrated to Canada with his father, grandparents, aunts and uncle. The family settled in the Lac La Biche area. Paul attended the Venice and Christy Creek schools and graduated from Lac La Biche High School in 1950. He and Iris Kotyshyn were married in 1967.

Paul spent his entire career in the oil industry, beginning in 1950 as a rodman, a roustabout and rig hand. He worked on the Edmonton to Entwistle leg of the original Trans Mountain Pipeline in 1952-3. Paul began work in the Pembina oilfield in Drayton Valley for Stanolind Oil and Gas in 1955. He worked for this company through several name changes – Pan American, and finally Amoco Canada Petroleum Co. He retired in 1986 at the age of 55 years. He was a conscientious employee and treated his team with respect and dignity.

Paul enjoyed a long retirement of 36 years, spending 24 winters in Mesa, Arizona. He enjoyed fishing, ice fishing and especially planning with his hunting friends how to outsmart the elk on the farm. Time spent with his grandchildren, Zoe and Tate was very special to Paul and ‘Grandma Monday' was always looked forward to.

Paul was a resident of Drayton Valley for 47 years. Paul and Iris moved to St. Albert in 2002 and Edmonton in 2011 to be nearer to their son and his family.

A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 – 111 Avenue, Edmonton.

Memory is eternal – ‘til we meet again
