Obituary for Pauline (Paulina) Hawirko

Pauline (Paulina) Hawirko
July 24, 1924 – August 4, 2022

It is with great sadness that the family of Pauline Hawirko announce her passing at the great age of 98 years.

Auntie was a fiery redhead who was fiercely independent before it was a movement. She was born on a farm outside of Innisfree to Jessie and Alex Hawirko. Unwilling to live the life her father had planned for her, she moved to Wells, BC at the age of 14 to live with her sister, Nancy. While there, she worked in rooming houses scrubbing floors and cooking. When she returned to Edmonton, she started working at Canada Packers where she worked producing sausages until they shut down in 1983. Her whole life she was very proud of her flowers. She had over 40 flowerpots of geraniums and begonias that she would carry in and out of her garage when the weather was too stormy or too hot. She lived with pride in her own home and looked after it until her failing health forced her into a care home a few years ago. Although she never married, she was sought after by many suiters, but due to her independent nature she instead devoted her life to her extended family.

Pauline outlived all her 11 beloved brothers and sisters: Mike, Steve, Pete, Nick, Andy, Bill, Fred, Anne and Kathy (as toddlers), Nancy and Elsie. We know that they are all together now. Although she had no children, Paulina loved and was dearly loved by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at the St. Albert Retirement Residence for their loving care over the past two years.

Prayers will be held Monday, August 15, 2022, at 7 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 – 111 Avenue, Edmonton. Funeral Service Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Park Memorial Chapel.
