Obituary for Richard Lyne

Richard Lyne
July 28, 1930 - July 14, 2022

On July 14, 2022, Richard Welkos Lyne passed away.

Richard is survived by his children, Leslie, Allyson, and Tom (Sophie); grandchildren, Beatrice (Ryan), Lucie (Tim), Lisa, Maeve, Thomas and Leo; great-grandchildren, Emma, Elodie, Rosalie and Samuel; nieces, Barbara (Don) and Anne (Roger). He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jean; sister, Marjory; and parents, Hazel and Harry Lyne.

Richard grew up in Calgary, where he developed a love for nature, the mountains, cycling, model airplanes, and playing trumpet. After getting a degree in civil engineering from U of A, he stayed in Edmonton where he joined the YMCA and met Jean. They married in 1955, started a family, then in 1960 he joined Alberta Transportation to design bridges for Alberta highways for the next 31 years.

Over the years, Richard sailed on Cooking Lake, flew and rebuilt a homebuilt airplane, travelled North America with Jean in their GMC motorhome, built a house for his daughter Leslie, and listened to the opera every single Saturday. He was thankful for the constant companionship of Jean and they enjoyed their lovely home together until her passing in November 2020.
