It is with deep sorrow that we announce that Walter Machura, surrounded by his family, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at the age of 87 years.

Walter is lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Dr. Shirley Machura (née Wolansky); children, Dwayne (Lynda), Cheryl (Dennis), and Marvyn (Brenda); grandchildren, Nycholas, Dustin, Christopher, Kristyn (Lagi), and Emily (Emils); great-grandchildren, Milia, and Adilynn; sisters, Mary Treasure and Elizabeth Galas; and sisters-in-law, Jeanette and Sylvia.

He was predeceased by his mother, Mabel; father, William; and brothers, Peter, Steve and John.

Walter was born on his family homestead in Stry, Alberta. His family later moved to a farm near Vilna, Alberta where he lived, worked, and graduated from high school. He moved to Edmonton when he married Shirley, the love of his life, and resided in the city until his passing.

Walter had a long career at AT Plastics, retiring in 1996 as the maintenance supervisor. He was also a very active member of St. Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church where he participated in the Men’s Club, Knights of Columbus, Parish Council, Cultural Society, and the Cultural Centre, serving as President of the Board of Management for many years.

Walter is remembered as a loving, kind, and generous husband, father, gido who always put the needs of his family ahead of his own. He was hardworking, honest, and engaged in his community, forming many long-lasting friendships with his neighbours, coworkers, and parish members. He also formed treasured memories and bonds with his many nieces, nephews, relatives, and in-laws.
He loved fishing, building projects, gardening, dancing, and being with his family and friends. He lived his life with the motto of “Leave all things better than you found them.”

Divine Liturgy will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at 10 a.m. at St. Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 7007 – 109 Street, Edmonton with interment to follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Basil’s Church Renovation Building Fund.
