Obituary for William "Bill" Smith

William "Bill" Smith
It is with great sadness that the family of William “Bill” Smith announce his passing, at the age of 92 years in Edmonton, AB.

The second of four boys, Bill was born in Beausejour, Manitoba to Isabelle and David Smith in March 1931. He spent much of his early and teenage years helping out at the family farm. Bill was married in 1961 to his wife, Marjorie.

Following in his family's footsteps, Bill’s career began with the CN Railway in Winnipeg. He subsequently found work with NCR Canada, where he was recognized for his troubleshooting skills. He eventually relocated to Saskatoon, and then Edmonton, where he held the role of Branch Manager until his retirement in 1993. In retirement Bill enjoyed a full and active lifestyle. With his wife Marjorie, they spent years of seasonal travel, heading south in their fifth wheel, where they looked forward to socializing with friends, exploring the area and playing golf!

Bill was a man of great character. He faced everything with honesty and integrity and always welcomed new opportunities. He had strong morals and his opinions were valued. He showed incredible patience and always made time to help others. Bill was devoted to his family and friends and was especially proud of his grandchildren. Whether it was get-togethers, family time at the lake or cheering on his grandchildren in their many sports activities, Bill always looked forward to gatherings and celebrations. He loved card games and could be counted on to say “Yes” when it came to playing some crib or rummy! He was well known and warmly received by his children’s and grandchildren’s friends and coaches. Bill was great company.

Bill will live on in the memories of his children, Jeff (Sharon) and Pamela (Brian); grandchildren, Kennedy, Bryan, Joel, and Sara; brother, David; his special friend and partner, Louise and many other close friends and extended family. He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie in 2010.

A special thank you to Dr. Mohamed (Family Medicine) and the staff of the University of Alberta Hospital for their care during Dad’s short stay.

A Celebration of Bill’s life will be held Thursday, November 2, 2023, at 4:30 p.m. at Westend Seniors Activity Centre, 9629 - 176 Street NW, Edmonton. Honouring Bill, please wear your favourite golf attire.

If so desired, donations may be made in Bill’s name to a charity of your choice.
