Obituary for Alexander Joseph Koper

Alexander Joseph Koper
September 16, 1932 - April 16, 2023

On April 16 - Divine Mercy Sunday, Alexander passed away peacefully at home at the age of 90, with his wife of 66 years, Josephine by his side.

Alexander is survived by his wife, Josephine (née Okurily); children, Steven (Theresa), Christopher (Deborah) and Suzanne (Allen); daughter-in-law, Lynne; grandchildren, Megan (Ryan), Christina (Rudy), Jillian (Lorenzo), Joshua (Christie), Anastacia (Blair), Tyler (Stephanie), Michelina (Paul), Levko (Karin), Makenzie (Frazer) and Parker; great-grandchildren, Leonardo, Alexandra, Lewin, Piper, Forest, Leila, Jackson, Elliot, Amelia, Axel and Levi; and sister, Anne (Lawrence).

He was predeceased by his son, Gregory; parents, Michael and Mary (née Hannas); and brother, Lawrence (Janet).

Alexander was born in Kimberley, BC, grew up in Vernon, graduated from SAIT and in 1953 began working at Celanese as a power engineer, a position he held until his retirement in 1997. It was here he garnered the title of Iron Man for his strong work ethic - only ever missing a day of work due to surgery.

He was a devout member of St. Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Edmonton, and President of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Leduc.

Throughout his illness, Alexander was supported by his loving family and numerous close friends. He had many regular visitors and it was often standing room only, as multiple visits turned into parties. He was able to spend his last six weeks at home, under the loving care of Josephine and family, thanks especially to Steven and Suzanne who spent day and night with them in their home. Alexander enjoyed his last Easter at home in the company of his family.

A special thank you to St. Basil’s Fathers Thomas, Mark and Serafym; Sisters Zoe and Veronica for their spiritual support; to the doctors and staff of the Grey Nuns, University, General and Royal Alexandra Hospitals; and to Jemma and the other home care workers who all aided in Alexander’s treatment over the past seven months.

Prayers will be held on Friday, April 21, 2023, at 7 p.m. and Divine Liturgy on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 10 a.m., both at St. Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 7007 - 109 Street. Basilian Fathers officiating with interment in Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, RR 260, 1.5 miles south of Highway 19.

In lieu of other tributes, donations in Alexander’s memory may be made to Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate or the Basilian Fathers.
