Obituary for Betty-Anne Gillund (née Regehr)

Betty-Anne Gillund (née Regehr)
August 21, 1944 – April 23, 2023

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Betty-Anne Gillund (née Regehr) on Sunday, April 23, 2023, in Smoky Lake, Alberta.

She studied Pharmacy at the University of Alberta and continued her career at various locations in Central and Northern Alberta. Upon settling in Smoky Lake, she worked at the previous and current locations of George McDougall Memorial Hospital pharmacies and retail pharmacies in Smoky Lake.

While raising her family, she will be remembered by many as a teaching assistant at H.A. Kostash School Kindergarten. Her dedication helped establish the Smoky Lake United Church. She was a founding member of the Smoky Lake Kinettes and active in the group for many years. One of her passions was reading, expressed via support of the Smoky Lake Public Library and involvement with The Book Club. More recently, the community of “Red Hats” provided comradery.

We can recount many fond memories of travelling adventures with Betty-Anne. Flower gardening brought her joy, as did painting and scrapbooking. Cat-themed memorabilia as well as an extensive feline family surrounded her at the farm. She was extremely keen on shoes, the color purple, shoes, fashion, and also shoes.

Betty-Anne will be lovingly remembered by her husband Grant; children Shannon, Eric and husband Lee, and Garth and wife Debbie; grandchildren Heather, Lauren, Tori, and Jordan Walls, and Emiel and Grace Gillund; and nephew Mark (Maureen) Phillips.

She was predeceased by her sister Joyce Friesen (née Regehr); and her brother Henry Regehr.

Special thanks to the medical teams at George McDougall Memorial Hospital and support staff at Bar-V-Nook Manor, in addition to the staff at Raubenheimer Medical Clinic for their expert care. Thanks also to the many friends and residents at Bar-V-Nook and the Auxiliary Hospital, some of whom were former colleagues and students.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life June 16, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Smoky Lake Ukrainian National Hall, 107 Willow Creek Street, Smoky Lake, AB. Reverend Dr. Earle Sharam officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the University of Alberta Pharmacy Student Awards Endowment program and the Knowledge Network.
