How Olive Influenced Me

How Olive Schurek Influenced Me   I have so many fond memories of Olive and she made an impact on me which helped to shape who I am today.    I first met Olive when I enrolled in Brownies (1954). She reminded me so much of my mother as she also nurtured and helped me to develop. There are three people that had the greatest influence on my life; my parents and Olive.    I was so sad when I was old enough leave Brownies and move to Guides because I would have to leave Mrs. Schurek. I knew that an older girl from Guides would come and help with the Brownies so I decided that was what I want to do. I approached Mrs. Schurek, as nervous as could be, and asked her if I could help with the Brownies. I’m sure she knew that I, shy and immature, wouldn’t be much help but Olive was also compassionate and understanding. After thinking a bit and giving me a talk about responsibility and how to behave as a leader she said I could become a Packie. Her influence from those years started me on a lifetime of volunteering, leadership.   Even after I moved away and went on to other things, we kept in touch every year at Christmas. She would send a letter and a birthday card and tell me all about her family and I would do the same. I feel blessed and thankful Olive Schurek was a part of my life.
