Obituary for Don "Beaver" Poile

Don "Beaver" Poile
June 1, 1932 – February 23, 2024

A devoted, loving husband of 69 years to Cecile; fabulous father of Donna (Derek), Bob (Donna), Maureen (Rob), and Joanne; Papa to nine grandchildren, Michael, Alison, Christine, Andrea, Ellen, Sarah, Dan, Matthew, and Jacklyn; and great-Papa to three great-grandchildren, Bennett, Jack, and Declan. Don was well loved by all.

Don was born in Fort William (Thunder Bay), Ontario, the youngest of five children. His father gave him the nickname ‘Beaver’ and it stuck! He followed his older brother, Norman ‘Bud’, into hockey and played 10 years of professional hockey for the Edmonton Flyers, Hershey Bears, and the Detroit Red Wings. After retiring from hockey in 1962, Don started his sales career with Carnation in Edmonton. Don was a natural salesman who built a successful career which took him from Edmonton to Winnipeg to Calgary where he retired from Nestle in 1993. Don had a rewarding career with both Carnation and Nestle, making lifelong friendships with his bosses and colleagues alike.

But what Don really excelled at and enjoyed was retirement. Don and Cecile wintered in Naples, Florida playing golf, tennis, and bridge creating many memories and sharing laughter with friends and family. It was easy to be Don’s friend; he was quick witted with a keen sense of humour, plenty of stories and “Beaverism’s”, but kindness was really his hallmark.

He loved to play cards, cribbage, bridge, and blackjack were his favourites. His “Poile luck” was ever present when he played; everyone wanted to be his partner! Don knew how to enjoy the small things in life – a beer or two at the BBQ, a hot dog, ice cream, anything chocolate, or Frank Sinatra on the radio with family and friends was all he needed to make his day.

Don was grateful for his long, wonderful life. He will be missed and remembered by many.

No funeral service will be held as per Don’s wishes.
