On February 12, 2023, Hilda Gurba (née Zerbst) passed from natural causes in her own home at the age of 98 years. She was born on October 11, 1924, in the Obeitzke, Rogasen area of Western Poland.

Hilda was predeceased by her husband, John, having shared a marriage of 61 years. She is survived by her three children, Alex (Sheila), Andry and Kathy (Judd); two grandchildren, Lucas (Kara) and Nadya; siblings, Gustav and Adelgunde with their families in Germany, Konrad and Elfriede with their families in Canada; and a very special extended family by marriage.

In 1950 she immigrated to Canada without knowing a soul and unable to speak the language. Undaunted, she fell in love with a man on a similar path. They married and raised a family in their newfound home country.

A Celebration of Hilda’s Life will be held Thursday, March 2, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Park Memorial, 9709 – 111 Avenue, Edmonton with interment in Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Darling, AB.
