In the 1980s, John and his son took my friend and I on a trip around the North Boundary.  The only reason he allowed me to bring my own horse on this trip was because I'd loaned him my horse for the summer before to use as a pack horse.  As a matter of fact, he was the one who found me this horse as he knew I was searching for a new horse after mine passed away.  Turns out my horse didn't like hanging around with the other horses and took off back to the trailhead on the first night.  His son, not sure if it was Gerald or Tom, had to track my horse back to the trailhead and bring her back to our camp.  He wasn't pleased with me!  Nonetheless, my friend and I had a wonderful trip and I even took a picture of John kissing my horse after making a big fuss about horses only being animals and not pets!  John was a crusty but lovable old codger!
