Obituary for Reverend Edward "Ed" Scarlett

Reverend Edward "Ed" Scarlett
Reverend Edward Joseph “Ed” Scarlett passed away on January 6th, 2023, supported by his loving family and the spirits of others who loved him.

He is survived by his partner, Margaret Brown; his children, John, Marla (Patrick), Helen (Richard), Michael (Constance); and his adored grandchildren, Julien, Kassia, and Zoe. He is remembered fondly by his siblings, Patricia (Bill), Bob (Kathy), Linda and other extended family.

Ed was predeceased by sister, Marjorie (2009).

Ed was born November 10th, 1940, in Eston, Saskatchewan. The eldest of five children, Ed spent his youth roaming open prairie fields and being captivated by their skies and landscapes, impressions that inspired and comforted him his whole life.

He attended The University of Saskatchewan, St. Andrew’s College and was ordained as a United Church minister in 1965. He served various parishes in Alberta in his years of service: Rimbey, Ponoka, Grimshaw, Peace River, Blackie-Gladys Ridge, Edmonton, Sherwood Park, Two Hills and Cooking Lake. He was also honoured to serve as chaplain for the 150th (Strathcona) branch of the Royal Canadian Legion for many years.

An avid hunter and conservationist, Ed was honoured as a recipient of Alberta’s Order of the Bighorn award in 2004 for his stewardship of wildlife and conservation efforts in the province.

Ed was incredibly passionate about art and music, as a multi-instrumentalist musician, performer, composer, artist, designer, poet and writer – skills that he brought to all his endeavors and ardently encouraged in others.

We, his family, extend our heartfelt gratitude to the many caregivers through the years who have supported him and most recently the caring staff and community of Jubilee Lodge.

Please join us in Remembrance of Ed on Monday January 16, 2023, at 3:30 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 – 111 Avenue, Edmonton with Reverend Sandy Ferguson officiating from Strathearn United Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family request charitable donations be made to organizations close to Ed’s heart: the Alberta Conservation Association and Doctors Without Borders.
