Obituary for Ronan Wyatt Cartwright

Ronan Wyatt Cartwright
On July 27, 2022, Ronan Cartwright left this world to embark on his next adventure at the age of 11 years. We are devastated by the sudden loss of the mischievous kid we called our son, brother, nephew, grandson, cousin and friend.

Ronan loved LEGO, Minecraft, and machines. Visitors to the house were regularly met with introductions to his newest creations. His intricate masterpieces were often inspired by his love of reading and fantasy; he absorbed everything Star Wars, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones. If there were hobbits in it, he was all over it.

Like hobbits, he enjoyed gardening, contemplating big questions, and word play. Ronan was clever, especially with language and logic, and delighted in mischief making with these strengths - in English or German. Whether exposing a loophole, explaining his logic, or making up silly jokes in surprising accents, his rogueish grin would appear when he was making trouble and would often be followed by his big laugh.

Ronan also had a thirst for his own adventures. His favourite places for this were the creek at Fairmont, the beaches in Mexico, and his local skate park, where speeding on his skateboard helped him glimpse freedom.

He shared his family's love of music: his favourites included Johnny Cash, Imagine Dragons, and Weird Al (whom he recently got to see as his first concert). He constantly had a song in his heart; the house was never quiet, between whistling, singing, playing DJ or drumming out patterns on the table, floor, dishes, or whatever made percussive noises.

With ever changing career aspirations from farmer, to miner, to space-cowboy policeman, to pilot, to astronaut-geologist, to master builder, Ronan was sure to make an impact on the world. We know he made an impact on our world.

Ronan is missed greatly by his parents, Shaunna and Damon; little sister who he adored, Mirenn; grandparents, Wayne and Brenda Cartwright, Real Gascon (Cynthia Mason); great-grandpa, Al Ganske; aunts and uncles, Chris (Annette) Cartwright, Dawn Cartwright (Adrian Patty); and cousins, Merek and Maddix Cartwright. The family cat, Boo, and his fish, Sushi, Fish Fish and Mr. Smiley also seem to notice that he’s gone and mourn his loss with us. Ronan was a fierce friend to many, but he was exceptionally close with Eike, Lisa, Sophia and Emma. He is predeceased by his beloved cat-guardian, Malcolm; his grandmother (and birthday twin), Sheena Gascon; and great-grandmother Hazel Ganske.

A celebration in honour of our zany, smart and fun-loving kid is being planned for his birthday, August 20, 2022, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Park Memorial Reception Centre, 11015 - 101 Street, Edmonton. Guests are welcome to bring letters and messages to put in Ronan’s treasure chest.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, or the Forest Heights Playground Redevelopment Project.
