With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Stefania Broda in her 100th year of life.

Stefania will be lovingly remembered by her son, Ihor; daughter, Darka (Darlene); son-in-law, Andrew Masiuk; four grandchildren, Oriana (Markian), Yuri (Stefany), Juliana (Nathan) and Yaroslav (Danita); six great-grandchildren, Kuba, Oleksa, Sofia, Nina, Theodore and Lev; and extended family in Canada and Ukraine.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 65 years, Oleksa (Alex); parents, Hryhoriy and Maria Zadorozhny; and two brothers and four sisters, all of Ukraine.

Born in Mala Bilyna, Ukraine, she was deported to Germany in WWII as a forced labourer. After the war she entered a displaced persons camp, where she met and married Oleksa Broda. In 1948 they immigrated to Canada and began a new life in Edmonton. She was employed at the Hudson’s Bay Company for several decades, before retiring to look after her granddaughters and took great delight in all her grandchildren.

Service to her church and community were an important part of her life. She was an active parishioner at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral and served in various executive positions in the Ukrainian Catholic Womens’ League and sang in various choirs.

Stefania had a phenomenal memory and often shared a fitting poem or song to mark special occasions. She was proud of her Ukrainian heritage and was a true “hospodynia.” She loved cooking and baking, tending her magnificent flowers, and working in her sprawling vegetable garden, often with seeds she had cultivated. She loved to sew, embroider, organize and attend teas, banquets and other cultural events and to converse with her many friends. She lived a life of devotion to her family, church, community and culture, a life worthy of emulation. She will be dearly missed.

A Divine Liturgy will be held Monday March 6, 2023, at 10 a.m. at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, 10825 - 97 Street NW, Edmonton with interment at St. Michael’s Cemetery.
